Gary Hoyt, designer of the Freedom 40, champion sailor and noted maverick, created the unstayed rigs to give "freedom" from the inefficient sail shapes of traditional sloop rigs as well as to give "freedom" from the compression and maintenance issues associated with standing rigging. The masts are made of carbon fiber and are set well forward on the boat. The mainsail and mizzen (almost same size as main sail) are fully battened, easy to use and 3 years old. "Tarali" is maintained in excellent condition and full records are available. She has a fixed keel/centre cockpit and has had a major refit in 2003 with new Perkins diesel engine and Onan genset.
